A civil engineer found in a tree planted in the lands of Meta a way to confront the negative effects of the drop in oil prices. His project generates employment and benefits farmers in the region.

As is well known, the drop in oil prices has led to massive layoffs of personnel linked to companies in the hydrocarbon industry, while multinational oil companies have considerably reduced their support for communities in the areas where they operate, which is reflected in fewer social projects.

Economy Hit Hard

The negative impact was immediate and has strongly affected the economy of municipalities in Meta, where other options are being sought to confront the crisis caused by the fall in the price of a barrel of oil.

In San Martín, a civil engineer found a way to face the negative economic effects and launched a project that generates regional development, employment, and positions the region positively in terms of entrepreneurship.

Raw Material

This is Óscar Iván Martínez Balaguera, the manager of Agroindustrias Tacay, a company that produces raw materials for the manufacture of high-quality cosmetics, chemical-free and 100% natural. “We generate eight direct jobs and 150 indirect jobs,” he said. He also promotes the cultivation of Cacay among farmers in San Martín and other municipalities in Meta, from whom the fruit of the longevity tree is purchased. “The fruit is processed in a special plant, the three shells are removed, and the oil is extracted, which has more protein than soy,” explains Óscar, adding that his raw material has already been acquired by multinationals that produce cosmetics for the Hollywood industry.

“The goal is to promote the cultivation of Cacay and its oil as a raw material made in the plains,” said Óscar Iván Martínez, the young entrepreneur from the plains who, without support from any government entity, has carried forward a high-potential project that is changing the face of the regional economy.
